In Argentina, Dr. Mauro Cardozo and Dr. José Ángel Ramírez are spearheading an initiative to support incarcerated individuals and their families. They receive complaints, review case records, and pay special attention to those who maintain they were wrongfully convicted or lacked access to an adequate defense.
Each case requires listening, examining documents, and acting responsibly. No one should be declared guilty or innocent based on a publication; yet, everyone has the right to have their grievances heard, to receive a fair trial, and to have potential judicial errors reviewed.
The team notes that they are working on several cases and have secured favorable outcomes in some matters during 2024.
Their goal is to pursue each case through the appropriate legal channels and, where applicable, turn to the Inter-American human rights system. Behind every case file lies a person, a family, and a hope that deserves to be treated with dignity.
This work stems from an altruistic commitment to human rights in Argentina. The aim is to expand the project to other Latin American countries and, eventually, take this experience to a global level. We strive for a justice system that listens, reviews, and never forgets the humanity of those deprived of their liberty.
